Book: Genesis

The initial stages involve technological advancements and the desire to create a city with a temple compound. This city and temple are intended to serve as a unifying force among the people. God, however, observes their efforts and judges them unfavourably. God’s response is to diversify their languages, effectively disrupting their endeavors. What was actually taking place at Babel was humanity’s distortion of its view of God. They were beginning to construct a deity of their own making – a god whose needs could be met through human actions. In return, this god was expected to bless humanity with a prosperous future. This narrative prompts us to introspect and ask a critical question: “Where am I fashioning a god of my own making?” Are we unwittingly shaping a god whom we can manipulate and control, expecting specific outcomes in various situations? Watch this sermon to hear how we can be sure not to fall into trying to earn God’s favour!
