Investing with Purpose

Moving from debt freedom to building lasting financial stability is the next step in our stewardship journey. This is where we shift from defence to offense, transforming our budget from a simple tracking tool into a powerful roadmap for the future. Just like a business, we must consistently monitor our income and expenses, explain any shortfalls, and immediately address any deficits. A budget, when faithfully managed, becomes our guide, protecting us from financial aimlessness.

Invest with Purpose

Investing is a powerful act of stewardship, but our motives matter. Before we invest, we must examine our hearts to ensure we are not driven by greed, fear, or a desire to get rich quick (Colossians 3:5; 1 Timothy 6:10; Philippians 4:6; Jeremiah 17:9). When our desire is to honour God, accumulating wealth serves a holy purpose: to provide for our families (1 Timothy 5:8; Proverbs 13:22), free us for ministry, and secure our future so we don’t become a burden to our children or church community. Investing is different from spending. It’s about using resources to create more income and growth. A healthy financial foundation is built on consistently living within your means and using the surplus to acquire assets that generate value. Wise investing balances risk and return.

Save with Diligence

The Bible teaches us the importance of diligent, incremental saving. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). Small, consistent contributions over time are far more powerful than sporadic, large ones.

A wise financial plan has two parts:

  1. Short-term Savings: This should be a liquid fund that is easily accessible. One should aim to save enough money to cover three to six months of expenses. This guards against unexpected crises.
  1. Long-term Savings: One should seek to make consistent contributions into locked-in accounts like retirement annuities, pensions, or tax-free investments. By starting early and contributing consistently, you harness the incredible power of compound interest to turn modest amounts into a substantial portfolio.

Plan for the Future

As life expectancies increase, so does the need for intentional planning. Calculating the net worth you’ll need to sustain your desired income in retirement is crucial to prevent being forced to dramatically change your lifestyle later in life.

This same principle of planning extends to how we protect what we have. Providing for your household (Proverbs 13:22) also means preparing for the unexpected. Insurance—for your life, health, and assets—and a clear will ensure that your family is taken care of if you depart unexpectedly.Ultimately, by embracing wise financial principles in our budgets, investments, and savings, we live out the truth that it all belongs to God anyway. Every decision becomes an act of faithful stewardship that points back to His provision and brings glory to His name.
