As believers in Jesus Christ, we all need to develop a Gospel-centred perspective on finance as we reframe our approach to money as an act of worship and obedience to Jesus. As faithful stewards, we need to recognize that everything we possess belongs to God (1 Chronicles 29:11-14) and adopt practical measures—budgeting, giving, saving, and debt management—as expressions of faithful stewardship to God’s glory.
When we truly grasp that all our possessions are God’s, our hearts find rest in Christ alone. Scripture reminds us that the Lord is sovereign. As our Provider, He promises to meet our needs—from food and clothing to emotional and spiritual sustenance—so we may learn contentment, distinguishing necessities from wants (Philippians 4:19; 1 Timothy 6:6-8).
Stewardship calls us to serve as managers of God’s resources, stewarding both large assets and daily expenses with integrity. Jesus warned that faithful managers are rewarded, while neglect leads to loss. A clear financial assessment—listing assets and liabilities—grounds our prayerful planning and accountability, equipping us to spend less than we earn, save diligently, give generously, and chart a path to debt freedom.
Faithfulness extends to civic duties as well. When Jesus said, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s,” He affirmed that paying taxes honours both earthly authorities and divine command (Mark 12:17; Romans 13:1,7). Legally minimizing taxes is prudent, but dishonesty in tax matters is sinful and undermines our witness.
An eternal perspective shapes every financial decision. Earthly treasures rust, decay, and vanish, but heavenly investments—souls won for Christ, lives marked by the Spirit’s fruit, and generosity that advances God’s kingdom—endure forever (Matthew 6:19-21; Galatians 5:22-23). Contentment springs from the certainty of an inheritance beyond imagination (1 Corinthians 2:9), freeing us from comparison and bondage to “stuff.”
As we embrace that it’s all God’s anyway, may our attitudes shift, our habits align with His will, and our hearts rejoice in stewardship that glorifies the One who owns it all.
