I have spent 6 days in the paediatric ward so far . I am not new to this ward and everytime I am here I have the opportunity to reflect on myself, our family, our church and our city. I thought I might share my reflections with you.

I love my job. I am so enourmously privileged to be able to work with kids and to see the world through their eyes. One of the things I love most about working with them is being able to witness their faith. Children are so uncomplicated! Their faith is simple yet so profound. They believe it and so it is! Isn’t that wonderful? As adults we make faith so awfully complicated and often it is because we have been disappointed when something we had faith in something that didn’t happen. For us, sometimes faith hurts.

I have had so many questions about sex and related topics from both parents and kids in the last few months. Parents grappling with how do you share what sex is all about in a godly way, how we protect our child, how much detail do we need to go into and mostly just a lot of “Help! I’m not ready for this!” The kids (ages 9 to 12) are grappling with how do I know what it is, what’s love got to do with sex, why did God invent sex and I have seen these pictures/ movies …

“Mommy, when does God sleep?” is a question many parents dread. Children are so concrete in their thinking and understanding and as parents we feel so ill-equipped to be able to deal with the faith questions of our children.

1.    I love you! To each other – your children need to be assured of your love for each other. Tell your spouse how much you love them in front of your kids and tell your kids how much you love your spouse. To your children – you can never say I love you too much. 2.    I am sorry!

I am not one for New Year’s resolutions. But I do have a mental list that I re-evaluate each year.

As a family this year we have continued to face some challenges with our son Michael. It has been such a blessing to be part of a community who have prayed and supported us on this journey.

November is a crazy month for us here in Bryanston! This year I have smiled at the irony of what we are doing. We are in the middle of a season of end of year celebrations – yet there does not seem to be much laughter and light heartedness around!
