This last Friday I woke up to the news of Nelson Mandela’s death. It was something that we had been preparing for as a nation for a long time and so I didn’t expect to feel grief, or much anything to be honest, but I did. I was grief stricken, and then I was wracked with a feeling of guilt and stupidity for my grief, because unlike most of my Facebook friends, I never met Madiba. I was never in the same room as him, and yet I felt like I knew him.

Dear BBC

This Sunday, we start “Naked”, which is our four-week sermon series on sex and sexuality. I would like you to consider a few things before we get going that I think may be helpful for you and for us through the next month.

Just before the resurrected Jesus left earth to go back to be with his Father in heaven, he gave some pretty clear instructions to his followers. He told us to make disciples of all nations and to baptize them as an evidence of their faith. On Sunday the 3rd of March, we had a pretty special day at BBC where we got to see the church living out that mandate. 34 people publicly declared their faith in Jesus Christ and went through the waters of baptism identifying with Christ's death burial and resurrection, while hundreds cheered on from the pews.

Dear BBC

This last weekend we had the rare privilege of having Dr John Blanchard speaking from the pulpit at BBC. He spoke on the topic of what happens when we die, and the response has been heartfelt and overwhelming.

Dear BBC

Our youth pastor Chris is one of the gentlest men I know, but he is fired up for the sake of the gospel and the way that it impacts and transforms teenagers. He needs help to see that happen, and so please read and respond to his wonderfully prophetic piece below addressed to his own generation.
If God stirs something in you, please get in the game. You will be dramatically changed.
Ross

Let's start off with what matters: the Gospel.

Dear BBC

I made a big mistake on Sunday night while I was preaching. I allowed emotions to overtake my clarity and said something that I should never have said.

I am sorry.

What I said was that people who continue to just attend on a Sunday night in the hope that they will somehow magically grow, and people who thought that they were ticking a religious box and pleasing God by just being present in the room, shouldn’t come back.

It was harsh.

Dear BBC

Yesterday, we launched our 3 service Sundays, and as I reflect back on how that went, I have a few thoughts I would like to share.

Dear BBC

As you all know, we are a season of remarkable growth and we really feel God’s special favour on us at the moment. We don’t want to make light of that, and we want to be good stewards of the grace and power that God is pouring out amongst us for His glory and fame.

As a result, we are having to make a few physical changes to the property over the next few weeks. We are doing this so that we can provide a more welcoming physical environment for visitors, and so that we can host three Sunday service gatherings well.

So here is what we are up to.

Dear BBC

Gathering together as a collective on a Sunday is one of the coolest things that we get to do as a church. There is something special about being together in one room, united by a common affection for our glorious God. We realize that what unites us is far greater than what may divide us. We can sing as if with one voice.

One of the useful little pieces of tech that makes that possible is the projector,  that is driven by some nifty software, displaying the words to the songs. Beautiful words, containing hope, truth, grace and love.

Dear BBC

One of the very exciting things that is happening at the moment is that God is stirring in some people’s hearts from across the globe and prompting them to come and join the fight of kicking in the gates of hell in Jozi.

Jessica Brotzler joined us this week for a couple of months, and she wrote you a short intro below. Be nice to her y’all.

In Him,

Ross

Howdy,

Dear BBC

God is just way too good to us.

Let’s just recap some of the things that He has been doing in our midst.

In 2012:

o    131 people made the decision to go through the waters of baptism.

o    Our 18:30 service has just about doubled in size.

o    Our 9:30 service has literally run out of room, and people who don’t come early are struggling to find a seat and may be better off parking their car at home, than in some of the places that they are having to park currently.

Dear BBC

Occasionally you preach a message and God just does something and it becomes significant in a way that you couldn’t imagine. This happened at BBC this last Sunday. It was one of the most challenging sermons I have ever preached, and the response has been overwhelming both from within BBC and from people who listen in online around the world. (You can listen to the sermon here )

Dear BBC

Most of you will be aware that we had quite the weekend. Here are five things that happened that I want to highlight quickly, and then we will focus on a few things we should do in response.

1. We opened the new Noah’s Ark building
